Expanded Work Rights for Interim Visa Holders – Effective 8 April 2025
At Success Global, we stay ahead of immigration policy changes to provide our clients with the most up-to-date and accurate advice. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced a significant update effective 8 April 2025, granting more Interim Visa holders work rights while their Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applications are under assessment.
Who Benefits from This Change?
If you are an applicant whose current visa expires while awaiting an AEWV decision, you may now receive an Interim Visa that allows you to work, provided you meet the following criteria:
You hold a work or a student visa that permits work during term time.
You have applied for an AEWV.
Your Interim Visa is issued on or after 8 April 2025.
Key Benefits of the New Work Rights
Faster Entry into Employment: You can start working for your accredited employer in the job specified in your AEWV application without waiting for full approval.
Seamless Transition for Employers: Employers can hire workers without unnecessary delays, reducing workforce gaps.
Interim Visa Validity & Work Conditions: Visa holders must check their visa letter for specific conditions, as these details are not displayed on VisaView.
Impact on Residence & Maximum Stay Limits
Work to Residence Pathway: Time spent working under this Interim Visa can count toward New Zealand work experience requirements for a future Work to Residence Visa.
AEWV Maximum Stay Limits: If you were previously on an AEWV, the time spent on an Interim Visa with these work rights will count toward your maximum AEWV stay. If you hold a different visa, the AEWV stay limit will commence only after your AEWV is approved.
What Employers and Applicants Should Do
Check Visa Conditions: Ensure you or your employer reviews the Interim Visa letter to confirm work rights.
Provide Employers with Documentation: Since work conditions are not on VisaView, share the visa letter with your employer as proof of work eligibility.
Plan Work to Residence Pathway: If applying for residence, document the time worked under the Interim Visa to support your future application.
At Success Global, we are here to help navigate these changes and ensure a smooth transition for both employers and visa applicants. Please contact our expert team today if you need help with your AEWV application, Interim Visa conditions, or residence pathway.
